Your PHP Journey — Four Phases
Recovery isn't linear, but it follows a path. Here's what the progression through our Alumni Program — Family For Life looks like from your first day to transition.
1

Assessment & Stabilization

Within the first 72 hours, your clinical team completes a full biopsychosocial assessment. We evaluate your medical needs, mental health history, substance use patterns, and social supports. A personalized treatment plan is built from day one — not a cookie-cutter template.

2

Skill Building & Regulation

The core of your PHP experience. Through small process groups, individual therapy, and psychoeducational sessions, you develop practical coping skills, emotional regulation techniques, and relapse prevention strategies. Our Health & Wellness 5 Pillars framework addresses sleep, movement, trauma regulation, education, and medication literacy.

3

Integration & Practice

As stability increases, treatment shifts toward applying your new skills in real-world situations. Elective groups let you choose topics that matter to you. Case management handles your external responsibilities — FMLA paperwork, housing, court coordination — so recovery stays the priority.

4

Transition to IOP

After Lifetime, your treatment team evaluates your progress during Wednesday clinical meetings. When you're ready, you step down to Intensive Outpatient (IOP) — the same clinical team, the same facility, a lower intensity. No starting over. Just moving forward.

Common Questions About Alumni Program
Alumni Program is our highest level of outpatient treatment — Varies hours per day, Ongoing. IOP (Intensive Outpatient) typically runs 3 hours per day. PHP is designed for individuals who need more structure and support, often those transitioning from inpatient or residential care. It's the first stage (THRIVE) of our 4-stage model, with IOP being the second stage (REINFORCE).
Your day runs from Monthly + quarterly events. It begins with a small process group (under 10 people), followed by psychoeducational sessions. Catered lunch is served at noon. Afternoons include Health & Wellness groups — covering sleep, movement, trauma regulation, education, and medication literacy — and an elective group where you choose the topic. Outside the daily schedule, you'll have 1–2 individual therapy sessions per week.
PHP typically lasts Lifetime, though the exact duration depends on your clinical progress and treatment plan. Your treatment team reviews your progress during weekly Wednesday meetings and collaborates with you on when to transition to the next level of care (IOP).
No. While PHP is often used as a step-down from inpatient or residential treatment, it's open to anyone who meets the clinical criteria for this level of care. Some patients enter PHP directly if they need intensive daily structure but don't require 24-hour supervision. Our admissions team will determine the most appropriate placement during your pre-assessment.
Our medical team manages the full range of FDA-approved medication-assisted treatments: Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), Vivitrol (injectable naltrexone), Brixadi (extended-release buprenorphine), Naltrexone (oral), and Topamax. Our Medical Director Dr. Michael Olla evaluates each patient individually to determine if MAT is appropriate and which medication best fits their needs.
Yes. Our case management team handles FMLA, short-term disability, return-to-work letters, court/DUI coordination (including work with IDRCs), housing referrals, and medical appointment scheduling. A full case management assessment is completed within 72 hours of admission.
We accept 16 major insurance providers including Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Anthem, BCBS, Amerihealth, Oscar, Meritain, Fidelis Care, NYSHIP, UMR, Tricare, Compsych, Highmark, and Magellan. The 5 Pillars are the foundation of our wellness programming: Sleep, Movement, Trauma Regulation, Education, and Medication Literacy. Activities include yoga, sound baths, ice baths, gym time, stretching, mindfulness, hiking, reiki, meditation, music therapy, and nutritional guidance. We have one of only 10 sleep specialists in New Jersey on our clinical staff.
While Valley Spring does not operate its own sober living facility, we partner with upscale sober living providers in the area. Our case management team coordinates housing placement for patients who need safe, structured living arrangements during PHP treatment.
After PHP, you step down to Intensive Outpatient (IOP) — Stage 2 (REINFORCE) of our recovery model. The transition is seamless: same clinical team, same facility, lower intensity. From IOP, you move through Outpatient (Stage 3: RECLAIM) and eventually into our Alumni Program (Stage 4: RECONNECT). Our progressive model means you never have to start over with a new provider.
