What Clients Say About Our PHP

★★★★★

The small groups made all the difference. I never felt like a number here. The therapists know your name, your story, and they actually care about what happens next. PHP gave me the structure I needed without taking me away from my kids.

— Former PHP Client, Bergen County

What Is Alumni Program?

Alumni Program—sometimes called Alumni Program (PHP)—is the highest level of structured outpatient treatment available. It's the bridge between residential care and the rest of your life. At Valley Spring, our PHP runs six hours a day, six days a week, creating a clinical container that is intensive enough to hold early recovery yet flexible enough to let you sleep in your own bed, see your children, and begin rebuilding the daily rhythms that addiction disrupted.

This is Stage 4: Thrive—the phase where you regulate your nervous system, rebuild foundational coping skills, and reinforce the commitment that brought you through the door. Typical duration is Lifetime, though your treatment team adjusts to your pace, not a calendar.

What's Included in Your Care

Every aspect of treatment is deliberate. There are no filler groups and no one-size-fits-all worksheets. Your clinical team designs a week around your diagnosis, your history, and your goals.

  • Individual Therapy — 1–2 private sessions per week, each lasting a full hour. Modalities include CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, experiential therapy, and trauma counseling.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) — Suboxone, Vivitrol, Brixadi, Naltrexone, and Topamax administered and monitored by our medical team.
  • Case Management — Full biopsychosocial assessment within 72 hours of admission. Ongoing support for FMLA paperwork, short-term disability, return-to-work letters, court/DUI requirements, housing, and medical coordination.
  • Treatment Team Meetings — Every Wednesday, your therapist, case manager, and medical staff convene to review your progress and adjust the plan.
  • Health & Wellness (5 Pillars) — Sleep, Movement, Trauma Regulation, Education, and Medication Literacy. Activities include yoga, sound baths, gym sessions, ice baths, stretching, mindfulness, hiking, reiki, meditation, and music therapy.

Your Daily Rhythm

Structure is medicine. Every day follows a carefully designed arc—from reflective morning process work through afternoon elective choice—so healing never feels random.

9:00 – 10:30 AM
Small Process Group
Groups capped at under 10 people. Intimate, therapist-led sessions where you work through real feelings in real time with peers who understand.
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Psychoeducational Group
Learn the science of addiction, neuroplasticity, relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and the skills that keep recovery alive beyond these walls.
12:00 – 1:00 PM
Catered Lunch
Nourishing meals served on-site—because recovery includes learning to refuel your body, not just your mind.
1:00 – 2:00 PM
Health & Wellness Group
Rotating programming built on the 5 Pillars: sleep hygiene, movement, trauma regulation, psychoeducation, and medication literacy. Think yoga, sound baths, hiking, and ice baths.
2:00 – 3:00 PM
Elective Group
You choose the topic. Art therapy, music therapy, meditation, creative writing, or advanced coping skills—this hour belongs to you.

Therapies We Use

Our clinical team is trained in a range of evidence-based and experiential modalities. Your individual therapist selects the approaches that match your history and your learning style—not a protocol manual.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — Restructure the thought patterns that fuel addictive behavior.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) — Build distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • EMDR — Process traumatic memories without re-living them. Particularly effective for clients with co-occurring PTSD.
  • Motivational Interviewing — Find your own reasons for change. We guide; you decide.
  • Experiential Therapy — Yoga, sound healing, art, music—not every breakthrough happens sitting in a chair.
  • Trauma-Focused Counseling — Specialized interventions for clients whose substance use is rooted in unresolved trauma.

Why Families Choose Valley Spring PHP

Clinical excellence measured in human terms, not just outcomes data.

01

Small Groups, Big Breakthroughs

Process groups are capped at under 10 people. You're not audience—you're participant. Therapists know your story, your triggers, and your progress by name.

02

8:1 Therapist-to-Patient Ratio

More clinician time per person than most facilities twice our size. Your therapist sees you, not a caseload number.

03

Six Days a Week Structure

Ongoing programming means less idle time for cravings and more reps at the skills that keep you sober.

04

Sleep Specialist On Staff

One of only 10 in all of New Jersey. Poor sleep is one of the top relapse triggers—we address it clinically, not with another pamphlet.

05

72-Hour Full Assessment

Biopsychosocial evaluation completed within three days of intake so treatment is never generic and always current.

06

FMLA & Disability Support

Case managers handle your paperwork—FMLA, short-term disability, return-to-work letters—so you can focus on healing, not bureaucracy.

07

Court & Legal Coordination

DUI requirements, court-mandated treatment documentation, and communication with legal professionals handled by your case management team.

08

MAT Without Stigma

Suboxone, Vivitrol, Brixadi, Naltrexone, and Topamax—administered and monitored as part of a complete clinical plan, never as a crutch.

09

Health & Wellness 5 Pillars

Sleep, Movement, Trauma Regulation, Education, and Medication Literacy. Recovery is whole-person—we treat your body, not just your diagnosis.

Your Path Through Treatment

1
Week 1

Assessment & Stabilization

2
Weeks 2–3

Deep Clinical Work

With stabilization in place, therapy deepens. EMDR for trauma, DBT skill-building for emotional regulation, CBT to restructure cognitive distortions. Individual sessions become the engine of change. Group work gets honest.

3
Weeks 3–5

Skill Integration & Wellness

Health & Wellness Pillars intensify. You practice sleep hygiene with our sleep specialist, build movement routines, and begin applying coping skills outside the building. Case management coordinates FMLA, housing, and return-to-work logistics.

4
Weeks 4–6

Transition Planning

Your treatment team begins preparing for step-down to IOP. Relapse prevention plan finalized. Sober living connections made if needed. Alumni program introduced. The goal: you leave PHP more equipped than you arrived, with a clear road ahead.
