Chapter Three

How Insurance Covers Addiction Treatment

Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, insurance companies are required to cover substance use and mental health treatment at the same level as physical health conditions. Here's what the journey through coverage actually looks like.

1

You Share Your Information

You provide your insurance details — either through the form above, over the phone, or in person. This takes about 2 minutes and requires only your Member ID, Group Number, and date of birth.

2

We Contact Your Insurer

Our admissions team contacts your insurance provider directly. We verify your plan type, confirm behavioral health benefits, check deductible status, copay amounts, and out-of-pocket maximums. You don't have to make a single call.

3

We Determine Your Coverage Level

Based on your benefits and the clinical assessment, we determine which ASAM levels of care your plan covers — from Partial Care (2.5) through Outpatient (1.0). Most plans cover the full continuum.

4

We Explain Everything — In Plain English

No insurance jargon. No surprise bills. We walk you through exactly what's covered, what your estimated costs will be, and what options exist if coverage is limited. Full transparency, every step of the way.

5

You Begin Treatment

Once coverage is confirmed and you're clinically approved, we schedule your intake — typically within 24 hours. From first phone call to first session, the entire process moves at the speed of your readiness.

"We handle all the paperwork so you don't have to. Insurance should never be the reason someone waits to get help."

Understanding Levels of Care

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) defines standardized levels of care. Insurance companies use these to authorize treatment. Here are the three levels we provide at Valley Spring.

2.5
Partial Hospitalization
Partial Care Program
Our highest level of care. Six days a week, six hours a day. Designed for individuals stepping down from inpatient who need intensive clinical stabilization with structure, individual therapy, group work, and daily catered meals. Mon–Sat, 9 AM – 3 PM.
2.1
Intensive Outpatient
IOP 5-Day & IOP 3-Day
Evening programming that fits around your life. Three hours a night, 3–5 days a week. Process groups, psychoeducation, health and wellness, life skills coaching. Available in-person and through our dedicated virtual program. 6 PM – 9 PM.
1.0
Outpatient Services
Outpatient & Virtual OP
The lightest level of structured care. 1–2 days per week with weekly individual therapy. This is the step before graduation into our alumni program. For individuals who have built strong recovery foundations and are ready for increased independence.
Chapter Four

The Questions Everyone Asks About Coverage

Insurance can feel like a foreign language. These are the questions we hear most often — answered plainly, without jargon.

In most cases, we can verify your benefits within 15–30 minutes over the phone. If you submit the online form, our admissions team will typically get back to you within one business day with a complete benefits breakdown.
Call us at (201) 781-8812. We frequently work with plans not listed on our site and can quickly determine whether your specific plan provides coverage for our programs. There's no cost or commitment to check.
This depends entirely on your specific plan. Many patients have minimal out-of-pocket costs — especially if they've met their deductible. We will provide a clear breakdown of your estimated costs before you begin treatment. No surprises, no hidden fees.
Pre-authorization (or "prior auth") is when your insurance company approves your treatment before it begins. Some plans require it, others don't. Either way, we handle the entire process for you — submitting clinical documentation, following up with the insurer, and securing approval. You won't need to make calls or fill out additional forms.
Yes. Under federal parity law, most insurance plans are required to cover MAT medications like Suboxone, Vivitrol, and Naltrexone. Valley Spring offers a full range of MAT options including Suboxone, Vivitrol, Brixadi, Naltrexone, and other buprenorphine formulations — all managed by our medical team under Dr. Michael Olla.
In most cases, yes. Telehealth parity laws in New Jersey require insurers to cover virtual services at the same rate as in-person services. Our Virtual IOP is a fully dedicated program — not a hybrid add-on — and is billed at the same level as our in-person IOP tracks.
Call us at (201) 781-8812 and speak with our admissions team. We believe that lack of insurance should never prevent someone from accessing treatment, and we can discuss options and resources that may be available to you.
Each level of care (Partial Care, IOP, OP) typically requires its own authorization. However, because Valley Spring offers the full continuum of outpatient care, we coordinate step-downs seamlessly. Our case managers handle all re-authorization paperwork as you progress through treatment — you stay focused on recovery.
