Real Stories of Insomnia Recovery

★★★★★

The small group sizes made all the difference. I actually felt heard in my process group instead of being one of thirty people. The therapists remember your story.

I needed help with insomnia and did not want to stop working. The evening IOP was exactly what I needed. Three months later, I have not had a drink.

How We Treat
Insomnia Disorder.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Identify and restructure the thought patterns that drive drinking. Develop practical coping strategies for cravings, triggers, and high-risk situations through structured skill-building exercises.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Build distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness skills. Especially effective for individuals with co-occurring mood or personality disorders.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization)
Process traumatic memories that fuel insomnia use without requiring detailed verbal retelling. Particularly effective for clients whose drinking began as self-medication for trauma or PTSD.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Resolve ambivalence about change at your own pace. MI helps you connect your own values and goals to the decision to stop drinking, building internal motivation rather than external pressure.
Experiential Therapy
Art therapy, music therapy, and movement-based modalities that access emotions words cannot reach. These approaches help clients who struggle with traditional talk therapy or have difficulty verbalizing feelings.
Contingency Management
Positive reinforcement for sobriety milestones, treatment attendance, and recovery behaviors. Research shows tangible incentives significantly improve treatment retention and outcomes.

How to Help Someone
Struggling with Insomnia.

Educate Yourself First
Insomnia use disorder is a medical condition, not a moral failure. Understanding the neuroscience of addiction helps you approach the conversation without judgment or blame.
Choose the Right Moment
Bring up your concerns when they are sober, calm, and receptive. Avoid confrontation during or after drinking episodes. Use "I" statements about how their drinking affects you.
Know Your Boundaries
Enabling delays recovery. Stop covering for them, stop minimizing consequences. Boundaries protect both of you and make it harder to avoid the reality of the problem.
Offer a Concrete Next Step
Instead of "you need help," try "I found a program in Norwood, NJ. Can I call them with you?" Having Valley Spring's number ready — (201) 781-8812 — removes a barrier.

What to Do If Someone
Refuses Treatment.

01
Do Not Take It Personally
Denial is a hallmark of addiction, not a reflection of your relationship. Resistance often means they are not ready yet, not that they will never be.
02
Set Clear, Firm Boundaries
Communicate specific consequences calmly and follow through. Inconsistency prolongs the cycle. Boundaries are an act of love, not punishment.
03
Consider a Professional Intervention
A trained interventionist can facilitate the conversation in a structured, non-confrontational way. Valley Spring can refer you to experienced intervention professionals.
04
Take Care of Yourself
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Al-Anon, therapy for family members, and support groups exist for a reason. Your wellbeing matters too.
05
Keep the Door Open
Revisit the conversation. Leave Valley Spring's number somewhere visible. People often seek help after a crisis — and when they do, the window is short. Be ready.
Worried About a Loved One?
Our admissions counselors help families navigate the conversation every day. Confidential, compassionate, available around the clock.
Talk to Our Team

Insomnia Treatment FAQ.

Do you offer medical detox for insomnia?
No. Valley Spring is an outpatient facility. We do not provide inpatient detox. If you require medical detoxification, we can refer you to a trusted detox partner. Once medically cleared, you can transition directly into our Partial Care or IOP programs.
What medications do you use for insomnia disorder?
We offer FDA-approved medications including Non-addictive sleep aids, trazodone, melatonin, hydroxyzine. These medications reduce cravings and block the rewarding effects of insomnia. Dr. Olla, our medical director, manages all MAT prescriptions. We do not use Methadone, which is only for opioid use disorder.
How long does the insomnia treatment program last?
Treatment length varies by individual need. Partial Care (PHP) typically runs 4-6 weeks before stepping down to IOP. IOP programs run 8-12 weeks. Total time in treatment, from PHP through alumni, averages 3-6 months. Your treatment team adjusts the timeline based on your progress.
Can I keep working while in treatment?
Yes. Our IOP programs run in the evening from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM specifically so working adults, parents, and students can maintain their daily responsibilities. Virtual IOP adds geographic flexibility. Many clients in PHP also maintain part-time work.
Do you treat insomnia and mental health together?
Absolutely. The majority of our clients present with co-occurring conditions. We are licensed for both mental health condition and mental health treatment. Insomnia, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions are treated simultaneously, not in sequence.
What does a typical day in PHP look like?
PHP runs Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A typical day includes small process groups (under 10 people), psychoeducational sessions, health and wellness programming, a catered lunch, and elective groups. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled throughout the week.
How much does insomnia treatment cost?
Cost depends on your insurance plan, deductible, and program level. We accept 16 major insurance providers and offer free, confidential insurance verification. Our admissions team will review your benefits and explain out-of-pocket costs before you start. Call (201) 781-8812 for a benefits check.
What is your success rate?
We measure success through treatment retention, program completion rates, and post-discharge outcomes. Our small group sizes (under 10) and 8:1 staff ratio allow individualized attention that improves engagement. We participate in CARF outcomes monitoring and continuously improve our programming based on data.
Can family members be involved in treatment?
Yes. Family involvement is a core component. We offer family therapy sessions, psychoeducation for loved ones, and a dedicated family program. Addiction affects the entire family system, and healing works best when everyone participates in recovery.
How do I get started?
Call (201) 781-8812 any time, 24/7. Our admissions team will verify your insurance, conduct a phone screening, and schedule your intake assessment. Same-day admissions are available. You can also complete the insurance verification form on this page.
