For Families

Supporting a Loved One Through Borderline Personality Disorder Recovery

Borderline Personality Disorder affects the entire family. Valley Spring offers structured support for the people who love someone struggling with borderline personality disorder.

How to Help a Loved One with Borderline Personality Disorder

Watching someone you love struggle with borderline personality disorder is painful, confusing, and isolating. Valley Spring's "Together We Heal" family workshop is a free, 6-session program designed specifically for families navigating a loved one's addiction.

  • Understanding the disease model of addiction and how borderline personality disorder changes the brain
  • Learning communication strategies that actually work (and avoiding those that don't)
  • Setting boundaries without guilt through guided practice
  • Recognizing enabling behaviors and breaking family role patterns
  • Building your own self-care plan to prevent caregiver burnout
  • Narcan training for emergency preparedness

Together We Heal is open to all families — not just Valley Spring patients. Six 75-minute sessions over 6 months, led by a facilitator with lived experience.

Learn About Together We Heal

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It's one of the hardest situations a family can face: you can see the destruction borderline personality disorder is causing, but your loved one won't accept help. This is more common than you think, and it doesn't mean hope is lost.

  • Don't wait for "rock bottom." The myth that someone must hit bottom before getting help is dangerous and outdated.
  • Educate yourself first. The more you understand about borderline personality disorder, the better equipped you are to have productive conversations.
  • Use "I" statements. Express your concern with "I feel worried when..." rather than accusations.
  • Set clear boundaries. Communicate what you will and won't accept, and follow through consistently.
  • Seek professional guidance. Our admissions team at (201) 781-8812 can advise on approaches, even if your loved one isn't ready yet.
  • Attend Together We Heal. Family members can get support regardless of whether the person drinking is in treatment.

Common Questions

Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most from patients and families considering borderline personality disorder treatment.

The right level of care depends on your situation. If you're stepping down from inpatient treatment or detox, Partial Care (PHP) provides the most intensive daily structure — 6 hours a day, Monday through Saturday. If you're working or have family obligations, our evening IOP programs (5-day or 3-day) run from 6–9 PM. Our clinical team conducts a thorough biopsychosocial assessment to determine the best starting point. Call (201) 781-8812 for a free, confidential evaluation.
Valley Spring is an outpatient facility and does not provide medical detox on-site. However, we coordinate closely with inpatient and detox facilities throughout the tri-state area. Many of our patients come to us directly after completing detox. We can help arrange detox placement and ensure a seamless transition into our Partial Care program once you're medically stabilized. Borderline Personality Disorder withdrawal can be medically dangerous — never attempt to detox on your own.
Our Medical Director, Dr. Michael Olla, prescribes FDA-approved medications for borderline personality disorder including Naltrexone (oral and injectable Vivitrol), Topamax, and other evidence-based options. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is integrated across all care levels — it's not a separate program. These medications reduce cravings, block borderline personality disorder's rewarding effects, and support long-term sobriety alongside therapy and holistic care.
Absolutely. This is central to Valley Spring's mission. All IOP programs (5-day and 3-day) run from 6–9 PM specifically so you can maintain work, school, or family commitments during the day. We also have dedicated case managers who handle FMLA paperwork, short-term disability claims, and return-to-work letters. Many of our patients are working professionals, first responders, healthcare workers, parents, and students who need evening scheduling.
A typical journey through our four-stage model takes approximately 6–8 months, but every path is different. Partial Care runs 4–6 weeks, IOP runs 6–8 weeks, and the Virtual/OP phase runs 8–12 weeks. Advancement between stages is based on measurable progress — not a calendar. Some patients move faster, others need more time, and that's completely normal. Our alumni program provides lifelong community support after completion.
Yes. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, most insurance plans are required to cover mental health condition treatment at the same level as other medical conditions. Valley Spring accepts 16 major insurance providers including Horizon, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and more. Our admissions team handles all insurance verification and can confirm your specific coverage within 1 hour. Call (201) 781-8812 or use our online verification form.
Valley Spring uses a comprehensive blend of evidence-based therapies: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to change thought patterns around borderline personality disorder, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation, EMDR for trauma that drives drinking, Motivational Interviewing for building internal motivation, and Experiential Therapy with real-world role plays. Beyond traditional therapy, our Health & Wellness 5 Pillars program adds yoga, sound baths, hiking, gym circuits, nutrition, sleep optimization, and mindfulness practices.
Valley Spring treats a full spectrum of mental health conditions and co-occurring mental health conditions. Beyond borderline personality disorder, we treat opioid addiction, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, cannabis, prescription drugs, and more. We also have a dedicated Mental Health Program for anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions. Many of our patients have co-occurring borderline personality disorder and mental health disorders, and our dually-licensed staff are specifically trained to treat both simultaneously.
Your first day begins with a warm welcome from one of our Program Coordinators — Ron or Cameron — who will greet you personally, give you a facility tour, and explain the program. Then you'll complete intake paperwork, consent forms, and a urine drug screening. A therapist or case manager will conduct your biopsychosocial assessment (about 1 hour), which helps determine your treatment plan and level of care. Our goal is for you to feel like a person, not a patient number, from the moment you walk through the door.
Yes. Family involvement is a core part of treatment at Valley Spring. Every patient receives family therapy sessions as part of their care plan. Additionally, our "Together We Heal" program is a free, 6-session workshop series open to all families — even if their loved one isn't currently in treatment. Sessions cover the disease model of addiction, communication and boundaries, family roles, codependency, relapse prevention, and self-care. The workshop is led by a facilitator with lived experience who understands what families go through.
