How Insurance Works for Addiction Treatment

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurers to cover substance use and mental health treatment at the same level as medical care. Here's how the process works.

1

Benefits Verification

We contact your insurance provider to determine your coverage level, deductible status, copay amounts, and any prior authorization requirements for outpatient behavioral health treatment.

2

Clinical Assessment

A licensed clinician completes a biopsychosocial assessment to determine the appropriate ASAM level of care. This clinical documentation supports the insurance authorization request.

3

Authorization & Approval

Our team submits the authorization request with clinical justification. Most insurers approve initial treatment within 1–3 business days. We handle all communication with your provider.

4

Ongoing Utilization Review

Insurance typically authorizes treatment in intervals. Our clinical team provides ongoing documentation to support continued authorization as you progress through levels of care.

ASAM Levels Covered by Insurance

Valley Spring offers multiple ASAM-defined levels of outpatient care. Insurance coverage varies by plan, but most major carriers cover all levels listed below.

ASAM Level 2.5

Partial Care (PHP)

Our highest intensity outpatient program. Six days per week of structured clinical programming including individual therapy, group sessions, health & wellness, and medication management. Ideal for individuals stepping down from inpatient or residential care.

Mon–Sat • 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
ASAM Level 2.1

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Evening programming designed for individuals maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. Available in 5-day and 3-day formats, plus a dedicated virtual track with the same clinical curriculum.

Mon–Fri • 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
ASAM Level 1.0

Outpatient (OP)

Reduced-frequency programming for individuals nearing the completion of treatment. Includes weekly individual therapy sessions and ongoing support as you transition to independent recovery.
