Your First 72 Hours and Beyond

From your first day, you'll be welcomed into an intimate, structured environment designed for high-risk individuals who need intensive support without residential confinement. Here's what the journey looks like:

Day 1: Welcome orientation, initial clinical screening, and assignment to your primary therapist. You'll meet your case manager and receive your personalized schedule.

Within 72 Hours: A full biopsychosocial assessment is completed. Your case manager begins handling external logistics — FMLA paperwork, short-term disability, return-to-work letters, court/DUI documentation, housing referrals, and medical appointment coordination.

Week 1: You'll settle into the daily rhythm of process groups, psychoeducation, and wellness activities. Your individual therapy sessions (1 hour each, 1-2x per week) begin, and your treatment plan is finalized during the Wednesday team meeting.

Ongoing: With an 8:1 therapist-to-patient ratio, you receive deeply personalized care. The Monday-through-Saturday schedule runs 1-2 evenings/week, virtual, giving you evenings to practice the skills you learn in a real-world setting.

Daily Structure — 1–2 evenings/week

Every day follows a purposeful rhythm. Our 6-hour program runs from 1-2 evenings/week, virtual, balancing clinical depth with restorative activities.

9:00 — 10:30 AM
Small Process Groups — Intimate sessions with fewer than 10 participants. This is where real connection happens — sharing experiences, processing emotions, and building accountability with peers.
10:30 AM — 12:00 PM
Psychoeducational Group — Structured learning sessions covering addiction science, relapse prevention, coping mechanisms, and understanding the neuroscience of recovery.
12:00 — 1:00 PM
Catered Lunch — A nutritious, professionally catered meal. Shared meals build community and model healthy eating habits as part of whole-person recovery.
1:00 — 2:00 PM
Health & Wellness Group — Built on 5 pillars: Sleep Hygiene, Movement, Trauma Regulation, Education, and Medication Literacy. Activities include yoga, sound baths, gym sessions, ice baths, mindfulness, hiking, reiki, meditation, and music therapy.
2:00 — 3:00 PM
Elective Group — Patient-choice sessions. You select topics that matter most to your recovery — from art therapy and journaling to life skills and career planning.

11 Reasons to Choose Valley Spring PHP

Each advantage represents a core operational principle that sets our Outpatient Program (OP) apart from other treatment centers in New Jersey.

01

8:1 Therapist-to-Patient Ratio

Unlike large facilities where you're one of dozens, our intimate ratio ensures your therapist knows your story, your triggers, and your goals — delivering truly personalized treatment every single day.

02

Small Process Groups Under 10 People

Large groups breed silence. Our morning process groups cap at fewer than 10 participants, creating the safety needed for genuine vulnerability and deep interpersonal healing.

03

Full Biopsychosocial Assessment in 72 Hours

No waiting weeks for a treatment plan. Within three days of admission, our clinical team completes a comprehensive assessment covering biological, psychological, and social factors driving your addiction.

04

Life Skills 5 Pillars Wellness Program

Our proprietary Health & Wellness framework addresses five essential pillars: Sleep Hygiene, Movement, Trauma Regulation, Education, and Medication Literacy — treating the whole person, not just the addiction.

05

Evidence-Based Therapy Suite

CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, experiential therapy, and trauma counseling — our clinical approach combines gold-standard modalities with individualized application for maximum effectiveness.

06

Comprehensive MAT Options

Medication-Assisted Treatment with Suboxone, Vivitrol, Brixadi, Naltrexone, and Topamax — administered under the supervision of our board-certified medical director to reduce cravings and prevent relapse.

07

Dedicated Case Management

Your case manager handles everything outside the therapy room — FMLA paperwork, short-term disability claims, return-to-work letters, court and DUI documentation, housing referrals, and medical appointment coordination.

08

Monday Through Saturday Schedule

Six days of programming per week provides the intensive structure that high-risk individuals need during early recovery, while Sundays allow for rest, reflection, and real-world practice of newly learned skills.

09

Patient-Choice Elective Groups

The final hour of each day belongs to you. Choose from rotating elective topics — art therapy, journaling, career planning, life skills, mindfulness — giving you agency in your own recovery process.

10

Holistic Wellness Integration

Beyond traditional therapy: yoga, sound baths, gym access, ice baths, stretching, mindfulness meditation, hiking, reiki, and music therapy all woven into your treatment plan as powerful complementary healing tools.

11

Sleep Specialty Expertise

Valley Spring houses one of only 10 sleep specialists in New Jersey — because quality sleep is foundational to recovery. Chronic insomnia and substance use are deeply interconnected, and we address both simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Select a question below to reveal the answer. Click another to switch.

What is Outpatient?

Outpatient, also called Outpatient (PHP), is the highest level of outpatient treatment available. At Valley Spring, PHP provides 6 hours of structured clinical programming per day, 1–2 evenings/week. It's designed for individuals transitioning from inpatient/detox settings or those who need intensive stabilization without 24-hour residential care. You attend during the day and return home in the evenings.

How long does the PHP program last?

The Outpatient Program (OP) typically runs Ongoing, though your exact timeline depends on your clinical progress and individual treatment plan. Your treatment team reviews your progress every Wednesday to adjust care intensity and determine when you're ready to step down to IOP.

What does a typical day look like?

Each day runs from 1-2 evenings/week, virtual. It begins with small process groups (under 10 people), followed by psychoeducational sessions, a catered lunch, Health & Wellness group activities (yoga, sound baths, mindfulness, etc.), and ends with patient-choice elective groups. Individual therapy sessions occur 1-2 times per week.

What insurance do you accept?

Valley Spring accepts 16 major insurance providers including Horizon, Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, BCBS, UHC, Tricare, and more. Our admissions team verifies your benefits within minutes — call (201) 781-8812 or use our online insurance verification form. We work directly with your insurer to maximize your coverage.

Is Medication-Assisted Treatment available?

Yes. Our Medical Director, Dr. Michael Olla, supervises MAT protocols including Suboxone, Vivitrol, Brixadi, Naltrexone, and Topamax. Medications are prescribed based on individual assessment to reduce cravings, manage withdrawal, and support long-term recovery. MAT is integrated with therapy — medication alone is never the complete answer.

How is PHP different from IOP?

PHP provides 6 hours of treatment per day, 6 days per week — nearly double the intensity of IOP. PHP is designed for individuals who need more structured support, particularly those coming directly from detox or inpatient facilities. IOP typically meets 3-5 days per week for 3 hours per day, and is the step-down level after PHP.

Can I continue working during PHP?

Because PHP runs 1–2 evenings/week, 1-2 evenings/week, virtual, it requires a temporary pause from most work schedules. However, your case manager will assist with FMLA paperwork, short-term disability claims, and return-to-work letters to protect your employment during treatment. For working professionals, we also offer an evening IOP option as a step-down.

What therapeutic modalities are used?

Our clinical team utilizes CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Motivational Interviewing, experiential therapy, and specialized trauma counseling. Additionally, our wellness program includes yoga, sound baths, ice baths, meditation, reiki, hiking, and music therapy.

How quickly can I begin treatment?

Most patients start within 24 hours of their initial phone call. Our admissions team is available 24/7 at (201) 781-8812. The process involves a brief phone screening, insurance verification (takes minutes), and scheduling your first day. Within 72 hours of starting, you'll have a complete biopsychosocial assessment and personalized treatment plan.

What happens after I complete PHP?

Most PHP graduates step down to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which offers both 5-day and 3-day tracks. We also connect patients with vetted sober living facilities if structured housing is needed. All graduates gain lifetime access to our Alumni Program for ongoing peer support, events, and community connection.
