Program Overview

The Most Intensive Outpatient Level of Care

Valley Spring's Mental Health Program is designed for individuals transitioning from inpatient treatment or those who require structured daily clinical support without overnight stays.

The Mental Health Program represents Stage 1 — Restore — of our continuum of care. Clients attend six days a week, Mon/Wed/Fri, from Mon/Wed/Fri, 3 hrs/day, virtual, engaging in a comprehensive blend of process groups, psychoeducation, wellness activities, and individual therapy.

What distinguishes this program is the clinical depth of each day. Mornings begin with process groups of fewer than ten people, where participants work through real-time emotional and behavioral challenges with direct clinician guidance. Midday shifts to psychoeducation — structured learning about the neuroscience of addiction, relapse triggers, and coping frameworks.

After a catered lunch, afternoons focus on health and wellness across five pillars: physical, emotional, nutritional, social, and spiritual. Each day closes with an elective chosen by the client — art therapy, journaling, meditation, or movement-based activities. The structure gives clients rhythm and routine, two things that substance use profoundly disrupts.

Identifying and restructuring negative thought patterns that fuel addictive behaviors and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Your Treatment Journey

Four Phases From Intake to Independence

Every client moves through four distinct phases — each building on the last, each bringing you closer to sustained recovery and independent living.

Phase 1: Assessment & Stabilization

Within 72 hours of admission, your clinical team completes a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment and develops an individualized treatment plan. Case management is assigned immediately. The focus is medical stabilization, establishing therapeutic rapport, and creating safety.

01
02

Phase 2: Intensive Clinical Work

The core of the program. Daily process groups, psychoeducation, and individual therapy sessions address the root causes of addiction — trauma, co-occurring disorders, relationship patterns, and cognitive distortions. MAT is initiated or adjusted as clinically indicated.

Phase 3: Skill Building & Integration

As stabilization deepens, the focus shifts to practical life skills: stress management, healthy communication, relapse prevention planning, and rebuilding routines. Wellness activities and client electives play a larger role. The clinical team begins step-down planning.

03
04

Phase 4: Transition & Step-Down

Clients transition to IOP (5-day or 3-day) with the same clinical team — no new intake, no waiting period. The Wednesday team meeting ensures continuity. Your recovery plan, support network, and coping toolkit are solidified before you step down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About PHP

PHP (Mental Health) is the most intensive outpatient level — 3 hours per day, 6 days per week. IOP (Intensive Outpatient) is less intensive at 3 hours per session, either 5 evenings or 3 evenings per week. PHP is typically recommended as the first step after inpatient or detox, while IOP serves as a step-down from PHP or as standalone treatment for those with more stability.
Most clients participate in PHP for Rolling 4-week curriculum cycles, though the timeline is always individualized based on clinical progress, treatment goals, and insurance authorization. Your clinical team reviews your progress weekly during Wednesday team meetings and adjusts the plan accordingly.
We accept 16 major insurance providers including Horizon, Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, BCBS, UHC, UMR, Amerihealth, Oscar, Meritain, Fidelis, NYSHIP, Tricare, Compsych, Highmark, and Magellan. Call (201) 781-8812 and we will verify your benefits during the same conversation — usually within minutes.
PHP runs Mon/Wed/Fri from Mon/Wed/Fri, 3 hrs/day, virtual, which makes it challenging to maintain a traditional full-time work schedule. However, many clients work with their employers on medical leave (FMLA) or adjusted schedules. If you need more scheduling flexibility, our IOP programs offer evening hours. Your admissions counselor can help you think through the logistics.
Most clients step down to our IOP 5-Day program (Monday–Friday, 6–9 PM) and then to IOP 3-Day, followed by our alumni program. The transition is seamless — same clinical team, same facility, no new intake. Your treatment plan carries forward, and the Wednesday team meetings ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
Yes. Valley Spring offers gender-responsive programming for women within the PHP level. The women's track addresses the unique clinical needs, trauma patterns, relational dynamics, and recovery pathways that women face. Groups are facilitated by therapists with specialized training in women's issues including perinatal, domestic violence, and gender-specific trauma.
Our medical team provides FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate. Options include Suboxone, Vivitrol, Brixadi, Naltrexone, and Topamax. Medication is always integrated with therapy — never prescribed as a standalone solution. Our medical director manages all MAT protocols and adjustments.
Most clients begin within 24 to 48 hours of their first call. Our admissions team is available 24/7, and we can verify insurance, conduct a pre-assessment, and schedule your start date in a single conversation. If you are stepping down from inpatient or detox, we coordinate directly with your current facility.
